HMS Excellent - Portsmouth
The new Galley constructed at HMS Excellent was to replace an old temporary Galley. The new building was constructed using traditional methods and materials to keep the building in-keeping with the existing surroundings which are all Victorian military style buildings. The foundations were piled up to 28m deep. The new building is single storey with slate roof, all of the new plant to manage the systems is hidden within the roof valleys to avoid spoiling any views and reduce noise levels. The building was not easy to construct from a logistical point of view as the only access onto Whale Island was over a single bridge that had weight limits imposed, this was pushed to the limit when the piling rig was brought to site. The equipment installed within the new galley is the latest technology and has a fully automatic ventilation system installed as well as the latest fire safety systems.
